Good Thursday, my beloveds,
Today we’re going back to Colonialism and Racism, because apparently a LOT of students have not passed their examination.
We’ll start with No Doubt, a band I super-like for their bouncy ska-ness and your professor’s total ladypersoncrush on Gwen Stefani, who we all wanted to be in the 1990s. Their new video for “Looking Hot” was pulled after First Nations groups complained that it “trivialized their culture”. THAT’S BECAUSE IT TOTALLY DID, NO DOUBT. To their credit, No Doubt did release a pretty good apology:
“As a multi-racial band our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures. Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people.
“This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately. The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and inclusiveness. We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video. Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are.”
It’s a real apology and not just your standard “I’m sorry if you were offended” that is so often a part of apologizing. Now let’s round up some other people who need to apologize and stop being so damn ignorant. Seriously, people, seriously.
The fashion industrial complex is the worst, seriously the worst about this.* Stop parading your damn models down the catwalk in war bonnets as a “homage”. Seriously, stahp.
Until tomorrow, when we shall talk about feminism and other funness,
Also, all apologies for no blog yesterday. Your professor was too busy doing this:
*special stink eye to ralph lauren here, for so many reasons.
